Why it has to be free
This is a methodological requirement, not generosity.
If storing your answers cost money, the people whose answers persisted would be the people who hold payment cards — which skews rich, urban, banked and Western. Our long-run respondents would drift toward exactly the population that already dominates global polling, and every figure on the site would inherit that drift.
A paywall on persistence would manufacture the precise bias this site exists to expose. So there isn't one, and there won't be.

How it gets paid for
Buys you nothing. That is the point — if supporters got better data, the incentive to keep the free tier honest would start eroding the day the first one signed up.
What it does buy is server time, translation review by native speakers, and the population data the weighting runs on.

Bulk export, an API, custom cross-tabulations, and methodological support for citing the data properly.
This is where the money should come from. Charging organisations that can afford it, rather than the respondents whose participation makes the data worth anything, is the only funding model that doesn't distort the sample.
